|The Assessor is the only Elected Official required by Law to have formal training and attain Certification through the Illinois Department of Revenue. These courses along with continuing education courses are offered through various institutions with emphasis on all aspects of Valuation.
The Assessor determines the "Fair Market Value" of your property, this value is divided by three to determine the "Assessed Value". Finding the market value of your property involves determining the price most people would pay for it in it's present condition. This is an ongoing process, considering the value of property changes from one year to the next.
The Assessor does not determine the amount of Property Tax for your parcel. The Assessor, who should more properly be called a property appraiser, establishes property values against which other government bodies levy their taxes. Properties are appraised so that each of us can absorb our fair share of the cost associated with each government body, for example: Schools, Roadways, Police and Fire protection.
If your opinion of the value of your property differs from the Assessor's, by all means contact Jon Klick. Your first alternative would be to contact the Assessor's office, but If this discussion does not meet your expectations, you are certainly welcome to appeal your assessment. The assessment appeal process begins with the McHenry County Board of Review located in the McHenry County Government Center. Their phone number is 815-334-4290. The appeal process is initiated by the publication of assessment changes listed in a local newspaper. The appeal period lasts 30 days from date of publication.
